- More than a dozen years since this Mouseketeer arrived in Britney Spears' slipstream, there's an impression Christina Aguilera has seen her best days. Like Britney she's now on the reality show circuit – giving it both barrels on The Voice USA – and her most memorable record in half a decade is a scene-stealing turn on a Maroon 5 single.
Throw in some personal upheaval with her divorce from music mogul Jordan Bratman and you've got a recipe for defeat. Well, think again. Personal issues and critical disapproval have woken the beast in Aguilera. Lotus bursts bullishly from the blocks and hardly lets up.
New age ambience and Glee Cast chants underpin Lotus Intro's portents about rebirth – "this is the beginning" – before Army Of Me arrives as a Fighter sequel, declaring war over powerful, throbbing Eurodance. She lets fly over the clopping breakbeats of Red Hot Kinda Love and brings Cee Lo Green's helium soul might into the warped R&B of Make The World Move.
Energy is the watchword, but even now she's capable of matching her classic Beautiful with shiver-inducing ballad Sing For Me, and that voice has lost none of its vigour. Game over? - The TV talent show “The Voice” changes lives — particularly the lives of its judges. Through his participation in the program, Cee-Lo Green completed his transformation from austere, intellectually challenging Southern hardcore rapper to roly-poly crowd-pleasing everyman. Maroon 5 was dead in the water before frontman Adam Levine turned himself into an overexposed chart-topping celebrity with moves like Jagger. Blake Shelton was a second-tier country singer whose best-known song was about a dog; now, he’s Nashville’s Entertainer of the Year.
Yet the rising tide has not yet reached Christina Aguilera, the cannon-voiced pop star who has often attempted to distinguish herself from her peers through her authenticity. Aguilera has never needed computer enhancement to blow the roof off the club, and has often acted as if she knows it. There’s an athletic quality to her use of melisma that makes her a natural for a competitive singing show. On “Bionic,” her 2010 set, she exchanged the organic quality of her voice for something more freeze-dried and modern. That didn’t connect with listeners, and with “Lotus,” the old, familiar Aguilera is back, steaming up 12 tracks of stylistically varied, hook-heavy pop that’s subtle as a sledgehammer and looking to capitalize on the success of the splashy show she judges.
And in case you’ve forgotten her side gig, she’s brought along her co-stars: Cee-Lo and Shelton sing showy “Voice”-style duets on “Lotus.” (She already paired with Levine on “Moves Like Jagger.”) Unsurprisingly, these are two of the least effective songs on “Lotus.” “Just a Fool,” with Shelton, feels handsome but perfunctory, and “Make the World Move,” which sounds like a wannabe soda commercial, is as goofy as everything Cee-Lo is involved with these days. Max Martin and Shellback, the calculating superproducers responsible for goosing up tracks by Britney Spears and Taylor Swift, have been retained by Aguilera, yet as catchy and randy as “Your Body” is, her voice is too big to fit their spreadsheet comfortably.
“Lotus” works best when Aguilera leans on the talents of collaborators who take a few more chances — careful, neatly circumscribed gambles, but gambles nonetheless. Lucas Secon, a former alt-rapper who lately specializes in pushing pop stars a few inches out of their comfort zones, outdoes himself on “Red Hot Kinda Love,” which manages to swagger despite a quirky beat. “Cease Fire” makes good use of a marching band. The slow-building ballad “Blank Page” was co-written by the veteran Australian pop singer Sia Furler, who has always had a firm hand with a sweeping, anthemic melody. It’s a naked attempt to recapture some of the self-affirmative majesty of “Beautiful,” Aguilera’s best-loved song, but Aguilera revisits that territory so enthusiastically it’s hard to begrudge her the trip.
Throughout the set, Aguilera behaves like she has something to prove, and a contest to win. As gauche as that may seem, she’s a fighter, and pugilism brings out the best in her. She knows this could be her last opportunity to recover the momentum she lost on “Bionic,” which muted her most explosive extremes. This time, she’s not repeating that mistake.

| DigitalSPY Uk: Christina Aguilera: 'Lotus' - Album review. 4 Estrellas de 5.
The singer's latest effort is easily her most cohesive yet.
Christina's fourth studio album, 2010's Bionic, left her in somewhat of a predicament. For a global superstar it charted respectably enough - top ten in 23 countries - but its sales were shaky due to a release in the traditionally quieter summer months and there wasn't a hit to be found amongst its bloated, double-disc spanning tracklist.
She confidently described the set as a "beautiful masterpiece" at a recent event, but you'd be hard-pressed to find the same levels of assurance on Lotus. Naturally, she's rarely short on confidence - lead single 'Your Body' is a thumping, brilliantly sassy two-fingered salute at those criticising her weight - but the Max Martin production credit suggests an element of safe-playing.
It's not necessarily a bad thing either. Other notable knob-twiddlers include hitmakers Alex da Kid and Shellback, who allow her to seamlessly flit between sexy and playful on the brassy 'Red Hot Kinda Love' and Guetta-styled club diva on 'Let There Be Love' without sounding contrived or confused. In fact, their ability to reign in her chameleon-style approach to music gives it the kind of cohesion where even the three-and-a-half minute 'Lotus Intro' has single potential.
The ballads are left for the album's back-end, though the drag in pace is countered by their impressive delivery. Special mention goes to 'Blank Page', which sees her at her most unnervingly honest, confessing: "I know there's pain, but people change/ Lord knows I've been no saint" over nothing more than a piano. The result, like the album's namesake, is an elegant yet robust collection that should see her through these uncertain times.

| NewsDay Review [Importante Periodico de Nueva York] Le da un A- a Lotus
Christina Aguilera's 'Lotus': Nice comeback Published: November 9, 2012 5:30 PM By GLENN GAMBOA glenn.gamboa@newsday.com
Maybe Christina Aguilera just needed something to overcome. Just when everything seemed to be going right, Aguilera faced a series of high-profile stumbles, including a divorce, the movie clunker "Burlesque," a national anthem fiasco at the 2011 Super Bowl and her disappointing "Bionic" album. Of course, we all know "The Voice" judge is a fighter, and she ain't gon' stop. Her new album "Lotus" (RCA) proves it. For "Lotus," Aguilera pulls together her strengths -- the sass, the raw emotion, the big ballads and, most of all, her incredible voice -- in a single stylish package for her most focused artistic effort yet. The up-tempo dance stuff is fun, especially the updated disco of "Red Hot Kinda Love" and the playful "Make the World Move," which features "Voice" pal Cee Lo Green. Aguilera is at her best, though, when she gets to really belt a ballad she emotionally connects with, like "Blank Page" and the album's crowning achievement "Just a Fool," where she and fellow "Voice" judge Blake Shelton empty their broken hearts in a magnificently sung breakup song that should stand next to "Beautiful" as her career signature.
CHRISTINA AGUILERA "Lotus" GRADE A- BOTTOM LINE "The Voice" judge rebounds in powerful pop style.

The last time Christina Aguilera made an album, in 2010, she sounded as robotic as the cyborg she played on the ‘Bionic’ cover. But three seasons as a coach on ‘The Voice’ have brought the diva back down to earth, at least a little. She sounds more human on ‘Lotus,’ her seventh album, but she also sounds a tad desperate – for a hit, for attention, for the adoration dumped on Taylor Swift.
So ‘Lotus’ jumps from one style (ooh, look … a club banger!) to another (clear the floor, Christina’s about ready to bust out a ballad!), trying on more than a half-dozen different producers (including Taylor Swift’s ‘Red’ hit makers, Max Martin and Shellback, on two cuts). Check out our track-by-track breakdown of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Lotus’ LP and leave a comment below letting us know what you thought of the album.
1. ‘Lotus Intro’
This isn’t so much a song as a three-minute Auto-tuned statement of purpose, in which Aguilera holds a pity party for himself and declares a new beginning (hence, the whole lotus theme).
2. ‘Army of Me’
Another I’m-still-here declaration, with talk of “second skin” and rising up and stuff like that. Aguilera comes on like Cher in the disco, overworking her pipes in a tune that doesn’t seem to have the same priorities.
3. ‘Red Hot Kinda Love’
This is more like it — a night out at the club with the girls. Even if Aguilera sounds sorta reserved, never quite matching the music’s jumpy flow, at least she doesn’t sound like she’s plotting revenge on all the people who didn’t buy ‘Bionic.’
4. ‘Make the World Move’
Aguilera keeps the party going with another club jam. Her ‘Voice’ co-star Cee Lo Green checks in with a line or two in the chorus. It’s not bad, but it’s pretty forgettable.
5. ‘Your Body’
‘Lotus’’ first of two collaborations with Swedish pop maestros Martin and Shellback is also the album’s best song. No surprise it’s the record’s first single, since it is one of the few cuts that has a splinter of identity. Still, Martin and Shellback’s contributions to Swift’s new album are way better. [Listen Here]
6. ‘Let There Be Love’
Here’s the other Martin-Shellback song, and it’s almost as good as ‘Your Body.’ It’s typical high-energy pop from the duo, but Aguilera’s big voice was designed to soar over monster beats like this.
7. ‘Sing for Me’
Coming down from the past few cuts, this strategically placed mid-album ballad features one of Aguilera’s best vocal performances on ‘Lotus.’ The minimalist synth drips stay out of the way and let the star do her thing.
8. ‘Blank Page’
Another ballad, but this one is the album’s showstopper – a piano-fueled throwback like ‘Beautiful.’ Because it doesn’t have much going on, ‘Blank Page’ doesn’t force the music. It’s a classic Aguilera performance, right down to the vocal acrobatics that drive it home. [Listen Here]
9. ‘Cease Fire’
This mid-tempo march about relationship woes features one of the album’s sturdiest beats, but Aguilera holds back from delivering a killer blow. Too bad, because the song’s sweaty simmer seems to be leading to one.
10. ‘Around the World’
It’s back to the clubs for this faceless dance track built around another solid beat. But Aguilera’s insistence on singing part of the song with Lionel Richie’s ‘All Night Long (All Night)’ island accent is totally misguided.
11. ‘Circles’
The most mixed-up cut from ‘Lotus’ dips back to the bubblegum pop of Aguilera’s debut for the verses, but pumps a ton of distortion into her voice during the refrains. ‘Circles’ doesn’t seem to know what kind of song it wants it to be, so it settles for two not very good ones.
12. ‘Best of Me’
Now, it’s back to the I-have-feelings-too theme that kicked off ‘Lotus.’ Aguilera is in full reprimand mode here, scolding critics who “kick me when I’m down.” She also rhymes “mistreated” and “undefeated,” in case you missed the point.
13. ‘Just a Fool’
The album’s closing track is a duet with another ‘Voice’ co-host, Blake Shelton, who helps to ground Aguilera. But the weepy melody and kinda twangy vibe seem out of step with the rest of ‘Lotus.’ Still, Aguilera’s throaty rasp sounds great.

| Billboard Puntaje: 82/100 puntosLa review de Billboard es genial, hecha por alguien imparcial. - Citación :
- Christina Aguilera's latest album may be called "Lotus," but "Soldier" might have been an equally apt title.
With song titles like "Army Of Me" and "Cease Fire," military drums serving as percussion for tracks like "Around The World" and "Best Of Me," rampant references to being a fighter and plenty of ammo for her haters, Aguilera is on the warpath for reclaiming her pop stardom. And rightfully so, after a rough 2010 that saw her album "Bionic" flop and the cancellation of its accompanying tour; a divorce from husband Jordan Bratman; and the disappointment of her movie "Burlesque" and its Aguilera-heavy soundtrack. But after rebounding as a coach on "The Voice" and scoring her first No. 1 hit in a decade with the Maroon 5 duet "Moves Like Jagger," the stage has been set for a comeback. As evidenced by lead single "Your Body," her first collaboration with Max Martin, Aguilera is back with guns blazing on "Lotus," a bright, shiny, and loud pop album that also features contributions from Alex da Kid (Rihanna, Eminem), Sia and Lucas Secon, as well as guest appearances from fellow "Voice" coaches Cee-Lo Green and Blake Shelton. The album finds Aguilera trying out piano ballads to club-ready dance pop to country to 90s rock, all with the subtlety of a chainsaw. It's full-throttle Aguilera as her fans want to hear, bringing her voice front and center where it was often muted on "Bionic." No note is left un-belted, no metaphor goes un-exhausted, and few verses feature just one Aguilera singing when three or four would be better. And yet, "Lotus" largely benefits from all the bombast - Aguilera hasn't sounded so fun and energized in years. Which songs are the best on "Lotus?" Read on for Billboard's track-by-track review. 1. Lotus Intro - Musically inspired by Aguilera's love of chill-out electronica (a demo of this song originally featured a sample of M83's "Midnight City" that ultimately wasn't cleared), this song uses the lotus flower as a symbol of Aguilera's rebirth "rise up / lotus rise / this is the beginning," she sings over tribal chants. Though she vows to "submerge from hurt, pain, broken pieces" and "leave the past behind / say goodbye to the scared child inside," the album will find she still has a few scores to settle.
2. Army Of Me - Billed by Aguilera herself as "Fighter 2.0" in her Billboard cover story this September, "Army Of Me" finds Aguilera facing old adversaries with the "thousand faces on me," at one point asking, "So how does it feel to know that I beat you / that I can defeat you." With dance-pop production UK producers Tracklacers and Jamie Hartman, look for this track to get a single treatment soon. Christina Aguilera Talks 'Voice' Rest, 'Lotus' Tour + Frank Ocean 3. Red Hot Kinda Love - An effortlessly fun pop song that artists like Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears have specialized in recent years, "Red Hot Kinda Love" is perhaps the standout song on "Lotus." Aguilera is at her most relaxed and playful, with melismas kept to a relative minimum, letting the funky, sample-heavy production from Lucas Secon (a.k.a. "Lucas With The Lid Off") take precedence.
4. Make The World Move (Feat. Cee-Lo) - A barn-storming party anthem emceed by the two "Voice" coaches, "Make The World Move" is backed by a brassy, big-band arrangement that would make the song an easy fit on 2006's 1940s-inspired "Back To Basics." But in the hands of producer Alex da Kid, there are plenty of modern flourishes to make it a hit for the 2010s.
5. Your Body Max Martin songs aren't exactly a vocalist's best friend, favoring giant melodies and hooks over histrionics. But leave it to Aguilera to find ways to inject her personality into this midtempo single, which really doesn't peak until the singer growls on the bridge "I think you already know my name."
6. Let There Be Love - Another Max Martin-Shellback team-up, "Let There Be Love" goes straight for the clubs, riding a propulsive beat and chewy synths straight out of Martin's recent hits with Usher ("DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love Again," "Scream"). Aguilera seems keenly aware that the song's overly familiar formula that leaves little room for personality, which is why she spends the last minute wailing all over the place.
7. Sing For Me - If "Army Of Me" is this album's "Fighter," then "Sing For Me" has aims of being a "Beautiful" for the next generation of Aguilera fans. With a thunderous chorus where Aguilera brings ironic depth to lines like "'Cause when I open my mouth / my whole heart comes out," "Sing For Me" is a gift to diehard Aguilera fans.
8. Blank Page Aguilera's previous collaborations with Sia were some of the most underrated tracks on "Bionic" ("You Lost Me," "I Am"), so it's nice to see the two reunite for "Blank Page," a song that will likely reach a much larger audience thanks to the elevated profile of both performers. A fiery piano ballad, "Blank Page" offers to wipe Aguilera's slate clean while trying to reconcile an old romance ("if I could do undo that I hurt you / I would do anything for us to make it through.")
9. Cease Fire - This is around the time where the military analogies start to wear thin. "Cease Fire" finds Aguilera "alone on the frontlines," asking her lover to "stand next to me" and "throw down your weapons." A litany of other war references follow suit, unaided by a chorus that never takes off.
10. Around The World - If "Your Body" finds Aguilera ready for love-making right here, right now, "Around The World" sees her looking to add a few passport stamps to the equation. Sadly, the second-verse reference to "Lady Marmalade" remains one of the few moments of fun on this otherwise tepid track.
11. Circles - The biggest surprise on "Lotus" comes from the blaring, 90s riot-grrl chorus on this anti-haters screed, where Aguilera invites her haters to "spin around in circles on my middle middle finger," while mini-Aguileras chant words like "round and round" and "motherfucker" in childlike voices. Way more fun than "Shut Up" on the deluxe edition, "Circles" is Aguilera at her most unapologetic and all the more delightful for it.
12. Best Of Me - Once again on the defensive, Aguilera shows signs of vulnerability on this powerful ballad before the military drums kick back in for the final chorus. A hopeful spin on a time where she was "knocked down and mistreated," "Best Of Me" sees Aguilera putting the events of 2010 behind her.
13. Just A Fool (Feat. Blake Shelton) - You know how so many of the duets during the battle-rounds on "The Voice" just sound like two people shouting melodically at each other for three minutes? That's what Aguilera's giant, bloody stab at country soul with Blake Shelton sounds like, rattling the speakers and all the whiskey off the bar with an epic chorus that only increases in volume as the song progresses. In case you forgot that Aguilera was a singer with a capital S, this song is one last helpful reminder.

| The New York Times - Pesimo review Christina Aguilera is one of the most powerful singers of her generation; is a friend to raunch, and an expert at making it broadly palatable; never lets tabloids get the best of her; has made it safe for still relevant midcareer pop stars to take sabbaticals for judging reality television competitions; hasn’t had a worthy hit in quite a few years; has maybe forgotten what Christina Aguilera does well.
“Lotus” is Ms. Aguilera’s fifth original studio album in English since 1999, which, in pop star longevity terms, is a slow drip. (She has also released a Spanish album and a Christmas album.) But consider that a strength: Ms. Aguilera imprinted herself far more authoritatively than many of her contemporaries and those who have followed her. She is, and has been, unmistakable.
Which is why the anonymity of much of “Lotus” is its biggest crime, more than its musical unadventurousness or its emphasis on bland self-help lyrics or its reluctance to lean on Ms. Aguilera’s voice, the thing that makes her special. All around her female pop stars are making pop that is forward and modern and often complex, while Ms. Aguilera, who used to play that role but is perhaps beginning to see herself as an elder stateswoman, is playing it straight.
Largely that’s by working with Alex Da Kid, who of all of the breakthrough pop producers of recent years, has the dullest, most monochromatic style, mistaking scale for emotion. Of his contributions, only on “Best of Me” does Ms. Aguilera push her voice beyond comfort; mainly she lets him dictate the arc, and it’s predictable.
Also, there are job requirements to fulfill. She collaborates here with two of her fellow judges on “The Voice,” probably just to give them duets to perform this season: with Cee Lo Green on the dull “Make the World Move,” and with Blake Shelton on the surprisingly warm “Just a Fool.” (She already collaborated with the third, Adam Levine, on Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger.”)
There are flashes of the Aguilera of old, though. Her voice veers volcanic on a pair of slow-build ballads, “Sing for Me” and “Blank Page.” The single “Your Body” is sweaty and bold, the characteristics that Ms. Aguilera once held tight to, and “Around the World,” which has flecks of reggae, is gauche and aesthetically vulgar in the way Ms. Aguilera once proudly was. As ever, Ms. Aguilera’s talent is in taking something tacky, and making it beautiful. JON CARAMANICA
